the fact that the ambassador was not in tripoli, he was in benghazi, that visit was supposed to be confidential. they knew where the safe house was. put all of those things together and the notion that this was somehow due to some film is ridiculous. of course it was a terrorist attack. >> the name that's been floating around of this supposed ring leader, the guy who is supposed to have been released from guantanamo bay in 2007, that would have been on your watch. are you familiar with him? do you remember him? would you have been aware of -- >> no. also, the justice department had zero to do with guantanamo and i don't know whether it was now today or not. >> i wouldn't even have been aware of him being released? >> no, he was in custody of the defense department. but the fact is that the alumni of guantanamo have resurfaced, whether it was during the bush administration or the current administration at an alarming rate. the recidivism rate is upwards of 20% and that's the people we know about, because they have either been killed or captured again. god knows how many of them are out there fig

this was their work in benghazi, and this is the work we will carry on. their sacrifice will never be forgotten. we will bring to justice those who took them from us. most of all, even in our grief, we will be resolute. for we are americans. we hold our head high. greater love hath no man than this. that a man lay down his life for his friends. the flag they served under now carries them home. may god bless the memory of these men who laid down their lives for us all.

our presence in tripoli as in benghazi is relatively new, as you'll recall. we have been back post-revolution, only for a matter of months. but, i have visited there myself. both to tripoli and benghazi. i was very grateful to have strong security presence with me. as part of our embassy detachment there. we certainly are aware that libya is a place that there has been increasingly violent incidents. the security personnel that the state department thought were required were in place. we'll see when the investigation unfolds whether what transpired in benghazi might have unfolded differently in different circumstances. but the president has been very clear, the protection of american personnel is and will remain our top priority. that's why we have reinforced our presence in tripoli and elsewhere. >> there have been protests around the world. president obama pledge to repair america's relationship with the muslim world. why is the u.s. even less popular today in some of these muslim/arab countries. >> jake, we're not impotent. we're not less popular to challe

following the killing of ambassador stevens in benghazi. and really, it was very apparent, larry, very early on that this was a pre-planned attack. the libyan president said it was a pre-planned attack. and you have the ambassador of the united nations for the united states coming on and misleading the public. basically we have sent a letter to ambassador rice to explain herself. >> you know, there's a story out today, i didn't know if you saw it, senator, but the story essentially was that the united states government within 24 hours knew it was a pre-planned terrorist attack. your thought on that. because that indicts rice and whomever else was in this cover-up even more. >> that's right. ambassador rice came on the sunday morning programs and said that, in fact, it was a spontaneous reaction of course to the video. and in no way was an expression of hostility toward america. and you have to say killing four american heroes, quite honestly, attacking our consulate, if that's not hostility toward america, i don't know what it is. so, no, i
